The ATR 42 is a twin-turboprop, short-haul regional airliner built in France and Italy by ATR (Aerei da Trasporto Regionale or Avions de transport régional). ATR and some Airbus models have their final assembly in Toulouse, and share resources and technology. The name "42" comes from the aircraft's standard seating, which varies from 40 to 52 passengers. The aircraft was the basis for the ATR 72.

The ATR 72 is a twin-engine turboprop short-haul regional airliner and is a stretched variant of the ATR 42, the aircraft seats up to 78 passengers in a single-class configuration, and is operated by a two-pilot crew.

The company is owned by EADS and Finmeccanica who between them have over 50 billion Euros in revenues.

The aircraft type has flown over 22 million flights making the type a very well tested and understood aircraft by the airline industry. It gained in popularity as a regional aircraft when fuel prices began to rise. The aircraft is 40% more fuel efficient than a jet and is optomised for the sub 500 nautical mile journeys.

Because of the demand for the aircraft, and its specific characteristics as a fuel efficient regional aircraft, it is in high demand and liquid in the used marketplace. These factors make it a very good aircraft for lessors to invest in and own.
